Innovative County Meals

The Sweden’s County Meals project has generated creative new interpretations of Swedish regional food traditions. Our aim is to awaken the interest of new generations in the unique ingredients, produce and food culture of Sweden’s historic counties, and in so doing, to stimulate rural development and gastro-tourism in Sweden People’s Houses & Parks, Gastronomiska Akademien, Måltidsakademien and the Royal Swedish Agricultural Academy jointly launched the Sweden’s County Meals project, which has engaged chefs, bakers, food producers, designers, artisans and beverage developers nationwide.

The project began in spring 2022 when Sweden’s County Governors were tasked with bringing local gastronomy players together to develop new meals rooted in each of Sweden’s historic counties. By the end of the year, all 25 counties and Sweden’s capital Stockholm had produced a finished menu.

The meals and the menus will be launched locally by People’s Houses & Parks and presented internationally as part of Stockholm – European Capital of Gastronomy 2023.

The aim is to highlight the importance of Sweden’s historic counties and the importance of local ingredients to Swedish food culture, rural development and gastro-tourism.

The creators behind these new county meals were commissioned to create a holistic gastronomic experience in the form of a three-course meal built around local ingredients, beverages and traditions, as well as textiles, glassware, china and everything else that goes towards making a truly enjoyable dining experience.

Leif Bergsten from People’s Houses & Parks developed the original idea for Sweden’s new County Meals together with Carl Jan Granqvist from Gastronomiska Akademien.
